# Set up redirects from the old site

Redirects are maintained per project environment under Redirects in Cockpit, one by one or by CSV import. Permanent rules answer with 301, temporary ones with 302, and they apply after the next deployment.

### Prerequisites

- List of old URLs, for example from the sitemap or Search Console
- Mapping of old to new paths

Last reviewed on October 15, 2026

Replacing an existing site with Laioutr almost always changes URLs. Without redirects, visitors, backlinks and crawlers land on 404 pages, and rankings are lost. Under **Redirects** in Cockpit, the team creates rules that send old paths to new targets.

### How redirects work

- **Source path** always starts with /. Placeholders such as `/p/:slug` carry the value into the target, for example `/product/:slug`. Exact paths take priority.
- **Target path** is a path on the site or a full address with http or https.
- **Permanent** on returns 301 for final moves; off returns 302 for temporary ones.
- **Enabled** switches a rule off without deleting it.

Query parameters such as UTM tags are kept, and trailing slashes do not matter. Redirects apply per environment and go live with the next deployment. Targets are written without a language prefix; market detection adds it.

## Step by step

1. 1 ### Step 1: Collect old URLs

Export all relevant URLs of the old site, for example from the sitemap, Search Console or the previous system.
2. 2 ### Step 2: Prepare the CSV

Create a file with the columns `source`, `target`, `permanent` and optionally `enabled`, one redirect per line.
3. 3 ### Step 3: Open Redirects

Open **Redirects** in the project sidebar in Cockpit and check that the right environment is selected.
4. 4 ### Step 4: Import

Select **Import CSV**, upload the file and review skipped rows in the **Import results** dialog.
5. 5 ### Step 5: Add single rules

Use **Add redirect** for further rules, enter the paths and set **Permanent**.
6. 6 ### Step 6: Save and deploy

Select **Save** in the bar at the bottom, then run a deployment.

## Check the result

Open a few old URLs in the browser or with a header check: each should lead to the new target with status 301, UTM parameters included. An export via **Export CSV** serves as a backup.

## Frequently asked questions

How many redirects are possible?

Even large lists with tens of thousands of rules work. The list is evaluated on the server and never shipped to the browser.

When does a change go live?

With the next deployment of the environment. On Laioutr Cloud, every promotion to production clears the edge cache of the production hostnames.

What happens with duplicate source paths in the CSV?

The last occurrence in the file wins.

Can a redirect point to another domain?

Yes, with a full address. That is why only a small group should hold the permission for redirects.
