# Set up notifications

Under Account and Notifications, each person decides whether Cockpit sends an email digest and desktop notifications, and which product and system emails arrive.

Notifications are a personal account setting. Each person decides how and about what Cockpit gets in touch. The settings are grouped into channels and account updates.

### Channels

- **Email**: a daily digest by email.
- **Desktop**: browser or operating system notifications. The browser has to grant permission.

### Account updates

- **Product updates**: a recurring email about new features and changes in Laioutr.
- **Important updates**: security fixes, maintenance windows and other system-critical messages.

Important updates should stay on so that notices about incidents and mandatory information arrive. Anyone using several browsers or devices should check desktop notifications on each one.

## Step by step

1. 1 ### Step 1: Open notifications

   Open **Account** and then **Notifications** in the sidebar.
2. 2 ### Step 2: Choose channels

   Turn the **Email** and **Desktop** toggles on or off as needed.
3. 3 ### Step 3: Grant browser permission

   When turning on **Desktop**, confirm the browser prompt with **Allow**.
4. 4 ### Step 4: Set account updates

   Subscribe to **Product updates** if wanted and keep **Important updates** switched on.

## Check the result

The toggles keep their state after reloading the page. With the email channel on, the next daily digest arrives at the account's sign-in email.

## Frequently asked questions

Why do no desktop notifications appear?

Usually the browser or operating system permission is missing. Allow notifications for Cockpit in the browser's site settings and check the setting on each device.

Can important updates be turned off?

Technically yes. This is not recommended because notices about security, maintenance and incidents would be missed.

Do the settings apply to all organisations?

Yes. Notifications belong to the personal account, not to an organisation or a project.
