# Set up markets, currencies and domains

A market bundles name, currency, flag and the domains visitors use to reach a storefront. Markets are created in the project under Markets, and each domain gets a language from Translations.

### Prerequisites

- At least one language under Translations
- Access to the domain's DNS settings

A **market** describes how a storefront appears for a region or segment: with name, currency, flag and the domains visitors use to reach it. Each domain or path is mapped to a language that was added under **Translations** first.

Laioutr uses **one currency per market**. To offer several currencies, create several markets, for example Switzerland in CHF and Germany in EUR. Switching currency on the storefront is therefore a market switch.

### Status and default market

New markets start as **Draft**. Their domain already works for checking, but nothing links to it and search engines do not index it. Only with the status **Active** is the market launched.

The **default market** sets the x-default hreflang, the primary URL of every page, what visitors get on unassigned hostnames and which market Studio opens on. With more than one market, it should be set explicitly.

Studio uses markets and languages for the switcher in its top bar.

## Step by step

1. 1 ### Step 1: Add languages

In the project, add every language the domains should serve under **Translations**.
2. 2 ### Step 2: Create a market

Open **Markets** in the sidebar and click **Create market**.
3. 3 ### Step 3: Set the basics

Under **General settings**, choose **Name**, **Currency** and optionally a flag. The status stays **Draft** for now.
4. 4 ### Step 4: Map domains

Under **Domains**, enter the hostname, for example shop.example.com or shop.example.com/de, and pick the language. Add more hosts or paths with **Add domain**, then save.
5. 5 ### Step 5: Choose the default market

Above the list, select the main market under **Default market**. Only active markets can be chosen.
6. 6 ### Step 6: Activate the market

After checking the domain, set the market status to **Active** and deploy the project.

## Check the result

The market appears in the list with currency and domains, the main market carries the **Default market** badge. In Studio, the market shows up in the top bar switcher. After deployment, the domain serves the storefront in the assigned language and currency.

## Frequently asked questions

Can one market have several currencies?

No. Laioutr uses one currency per market. For several currencies, create several markets and offer them through a market switcher on the storefront.

Why is a language missing from the domain dropdown?

The dropdown only lists languages added under Translations. Add the language there and open the market again.

What is the difference between Draft and not deployed?

Draft means deployed and reachable but not launched and not indexed. Not deployed means the market exists in Cockpit but is not in the current build yet.

Why can the default market not be set to Draft?

The default market has to be active. Choose another active market as default first.
