# Manage an organisation in Cockpit

The organisation is the top-level container in Cockpit and holds members, roles, projects, billing and API keys. Its name, projects, members and deletion are managed in the organisation settings.

An **organisation** represents a company or a team and is the top-level container in Cockpit. It holds all members, roles, projects, billing and API keys. A personal account can belong to any number of organisations, for example when an agency works for several brands.

The organisation is also the billing account: it buys licences and assigns them to individual projects. Each project stands for one storefront or website and has its own environments, markets and apps.

### Areas of the organisation settings

- **General**: change the name, copy slug and organisation ID, delete the organisation.
- **Projects**: search, open, create and delete projects.
- **Members**: invite people, see roles, remove members.
- **Roles**: define custom roles with permissions.
- **Billing**: plan, subscription and payment details.
- **API keys**: keys for the CLI, CI/CD and external applications.

Which areas are active depends on the permissions of the current role. Missing rights show up as a disabled tab with a tooltip.

## Step by step

1. 1 ### Step 1: Open the settings

   Select the organisation in Cockpit and open **Settings** in the sidebar. The first tab is **General**.
2. 2 ### Step 2: Change the name

   Enter the new name in **Organization name** and save. Slug and organisation ID are read-only and can be copied for support and integrations.
3. 3 ### Step 3: Manage projects

   In the **Projects** tab, search by name or slug, open a project with **View** or add one with **Create project**.
4. 4 ### Step 4: Invite the team

   In the **Members** tab, click **Invite**, enter one or more email addresses and choose at least one role.
5. 5 ### Step 5: Check billing

   In the **Billing** tab, check the subscription status and next billing date. **Manage billing** opens the customer portal for payment methods and invoices.
6. 6 ### Step 6: Delete the organisation

   Only if needed: in **General**, click **Delete** in the **Danger zone** and confirm. This requires admin rights, no active projects and no active subscription.

## Check the result

The new name appears in the organisation picker. Invited people are listed in the **Members** tab with a pending invitation tag until they finish signing up.

## Frequently asked questions

Can one account belong to several organisations?

Yes. A personal account can be a member of any number of organisations and switch between them.

Why can the organisation not be deleted?

Deletion is only possible for admins once there are no active projects and no active subscription. The info icon next to the button names the reason.

Can the organisation slug be changed?

No. Slug and organisation ID are read-only. Only the display name can be changed.

Why is Leave organisation disabled?

The only member and the only admin cannot leave the organisation. Give admin rights to another person first.

  A project is created in the organisation settings under Projects and starts with the live environment main. Further environments such as stage or dev are created in the project under Environments as a copy of an existing one.
