# Maintain markets and translations in Studio

Languages and markets are set up in Cockpit under Translations and Markets, and Studio uses them in its market and language switcher. Translatable fields are maintained per language; empty fields show the value of the fallback language.

### Prerequisites

- At least one language under Translations
- A domain for each market

Multilingual content in Laioutr has two levels. In Cockpit the team adds languages with their **fallback chain** under **Translations**, and under **Markets** assigns each market its currency, domains and the language per domain. New markets start as **Draft**: reachable, but neither linked nor indexed. The **Default market** decides, among other things, the `x-default` hreflang and the market Studio opens on.

In Studio the top bar selects market and language; the selection is kept in the URL. Translatable fields show a hint when they are localised or display the value of a fallback language. A field can be filled for several languages in one edit, and a page's URL path is maintained per language with the translate button.

For larger volumes Cockpit exports all translatable content as a JSON file for a translation team and imports it again. Automatic translation is handled by the product Translatr.

## Step by step

1. 1 ### Step 1: Add languages

Open **Translations** in Cockpit, choose the language through **Add language** and set the fallback chain if needed.
2. 2 ### Step 2: Set up a market

Under **Markets** choose **Create market**, set name and currency and assign the language per domain. Set the **Default market** explicitly.
3. 3 ### Step 3: Choose market and language in Studio

Select market and language in the Studio top bar. Draft markets are marked as Draft.
4. 4 ### Step 4: Translate fields

Fill translatable fields per language. The hint on the field shows whether its own value or a fallback is displayed.
5. 5 ### Step 5: URL and SEO per language

Select the page, adapt the URL path per language with the translate button next to the URL field and translate meta title and meta description.
6. 6 ### Step 6: Publish and activate the market

Publish the changes. Once a new market is ready, set its status to **Active** under **Markets**.

## Check the result

In Studio each market and language shows the right copy. On the storefront each domain delivers its language, and an active market appears in the market switcher and in the hreflang tags.

## Frequently asked questions

Why does a field show copy from another language?

The field is empty in this language and shows the value of the fallback language. Enter a value of its own to replace the fallback.

What does the not deployed yet hint in the market switcher mean?

The market exists in Cockpit but is not in the deployed build yet. It becomes available after the next deployment.

How can a lot of copy be translated at once?

Export all translatable content as JSON under Translations, have it translated and import it again. Close Studio before importing; Cockpit creates a restore point first.

What is the difference between Draft and Active?

A Draft market is reachable on its domain but neither linked nor indexed. Active makes it visible to visitors and search engines.
