# Import and export translations

Under Translations, Export downloads all translatable content of a project as a JSON file; Import applies the edited file and reports how many values were applied or skipped.

### Prerequisites

- At least one language in the project
- Deployed frontend
- Studio closed for the import

Last reviewed on October 15, 2026

Export and import put all translatable content of a project into one **JSON file**. The file can be edited offline or handed to a translation agency and then applied again, instead of editing every field in Studio.

### What is included

- Section, block and global section props of type text, textarea, rich text, link or media.
- SEO title and SEO description of every page variant.

Numbers, selects, colours or icons are not included, nor are interface strings or product data from connected apps. The field schema of the deployed frontend decides which fields are translatable.

### Import with a safety net

The import overwrites the project configuration and disconnects anyone editing in Studio. Before that, Cockpit captures a `pre-translation-import` snapshot. Entries that no longer match are skipped without stopping the rest. The content goes live with the next publish or deployment.

## Step by step

1. 1 ### Step 1: Open Translations

Open **Translations** in the project sidebar. At least one language must exist.
2. 2 ### Step 2: Export

Click **Export** in the toolbar. Cockpit downloads the file `translations-<project-slug>.json`.
3. 3 ### Step 3: Translate the file

Fill in the values per language or hand the file to the translation team. Keep the structure and entry identifiers unchanged.
4. 4 ### Step 4: Close Studio

Ask everyone to close Studio for this project, because the import disconnects running sessions.
5. 5 ### Step 5: Import

Click **Import**, upload the file and confirm the notice.
6. 6 ### Step 6: Read the result and publish

The message shows how many translations were applied and skipped. Then publish or deploy as usual.

## Check the result

After the import, Cockpit reports for example *Imported 124 translations, 3 skipped*. In Studio, the new texts appear in the respective language once the market with that language is selected.

## Frequently asked questions

Why does export or import fail?

Both read the field schema from the deployed frontend. If the project was never deployed or is unreachable, a message asks to publish or deploy first.

Why were entries skipped?

Values are skipped when their field no longer exists or is no longer translatable, when their language is not set up in the project, or when the value is invalid for the field.

Can an import be undone?

Not from the dialog. Before each import, Cockpit captures the pre-translation-import snapshot, which can be restored from the project's snapshot list.

Are product data translated too?

No. Export and import only cover the content of the project's pages, not product or catalogue data from connected apps.
