# Connect a custom domain
A custom domain is assigned to a market in Cockpit and linked to a language. After the DNS record is set at the domain provider and a deployment has run, Laioutr Cloud serves the storefront under that domain.

Every storefront on Laioutr Cloud has a permanent address under `laioutr.app` from day one, and it always serves production. In Laioutr, custom domains belong to a **market**: each domain row links a hostname, optionally with a path such as `shop.example.com/de`, to a language.
An apex domain such as `example.com` without www redirects to the www variant. The www variant is therefore the one to enter as the domain. Once a custom domain is canonical, the `laioutr.app` address sends `noindex`, so the two never compete in search results.
New markets start in **Draft** status. Their domain is reachable and can be checked before launch, but it is served with `noindex, nofollow` and not linked. Only the **Active** status opens the market to visitors and search engines. The **Default market** sets the primary URL of every page and the `x-default` hreflang.
## Step by step
1. 1 ### Step 1: Check the language Make sure under **Translations** that the language for the domain exists. Only existing languages can be chosen for domains.
2. 2 ### Step 2: Open the market Open the market under **Markets** via its name or **Settings**.
3. 3 ### Step 3: Enter the domain In the **Domains** card, add a row with **Add domain**, enter the hostname such as `www.example.com`, choose the language and click **Save**.
4. 4 ### Step 4: Set the default domain With several domains, mark one as **default** in the row menu.
5. 5 ### Step 5: Set up DNS Set the DNS record that Laioutr specifies for the domain at the domain provider.
6. 6 ### Step 6: Deploy and activate Start a deployment so the build contains the market with its domain. Once everything is checked, set the market to **Active** under **General settings**.
## Check the result
The domain loads the storefront over HTTPS in the assigned language, and Studio shows the market in its market switcher without the not deployed yet notice.

Why can example.com without www not be used directly?
An apex domain redirects to www. Enter the www variant as the domain; password protection also applies there.
Does the laioutr.app address stay reachable?
Yes, it keeps serving production. Once a custom domain is canonical, it sends `noindex`.
Can a market have several domains or paths?
Yes. Add further rows with **Add domain**, including paths such as `shop.example.com/de`, each with its own language.
Why is the domain not indexed?
