# Buy licences and assign them to projects

The organisation buys licences and assigns them to individual projects in Cockpit, much like seats in a team tool. Only the assignment unlocks the plan's features in the project; projects without a licence run on Starter.

In Laioutr, the organisation is the billing account. It buys licences and distributes them across its projects. This applies to the plans of the Laioutr Sites line (Solo, Plus), the Laioutr Commerce line (Growth, Pro) and to the product licences of the group products.

The licence overview shows, for each licence, how many are bought, assigned and unassigned. It is based on the organisation's Stripe subscription. Unassigned licences are billed as well, which is why Cockpit highlights them.

The assignment is the switch: as soon as a project carries a licence, its features and limits apply in Studio, Orchestr and the storefront, for example the number of markets and languages. Projects without a licence run on **Starter**, the free entry level with its own feature set and a Laioutr subdomain. An Enterprise agreement unlocks all features across the organisation.

Cockpit logs every assignment change with person, time and project.

## Step by step

1. 1 ### Step 1: Open the licence overview

   Open the licence overview in the organisation. It lists bought, assigned and unassigned licences.
2. 2 ### Step 2: Buy additional licences

   If a licence is missing, increase the quantity in the subscription through **Billing**. Cockpit picks up the new quantity automatically shortly afterwards.
3. 3 ### Step 3: Assign a licence

   Select an unassigned licence, choose the project and confirm the assignment.
4. 4 ### Step 4: Check the features in the project

   Open the project and check that the plan's features are available, for example additional markets or languages.
5. 5 ### Step 5: Release a licence

   Remove a project's assignment when the licence is needed elsewhere. For live projects, this starts a transition period.

## Check the result

In the licence overview, the licence is marked as assigned and names the project. The plan's features are available in the project itself, and the history shows the assignment with person and time.

## Frequently asked questions

Are unassigned licences billed?

Yes. Every bought licence is billed, even without an assignment. Unassigned licences should therefore be assigned or removed from the subscription.

Can a licence move to another project?

Yes. Remove the assignment, then assign it to the new project. For a live project, this starts a transition period.

What can a project do on Starter?

Starter is free and suited to building and testing. The storefront runs only on a Laioutr subdomain; custom domains need a licence.
